Tobi Amusan gets N5 million, house from Abiodun

Oluwatobi Amusan, the world, Commonwealth, and African 100-meter hurdles champion, was received by Prince Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, and was designated as the state’s sport ambassador.

Abiodun also declared a financial award of N5 million and gave the queen of the tracks a home in Ijebu-Ode, according to a statement made yesterday in Abeokuta by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin.

The star athlete, whose accomplishments were brought to the governor’s attention by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, was adopted by the governor on April 26, 2021.

Speaking at the occasion, which was hosted at his Oke Mosan office, Abiodun hailed Amusan as a role model for young girls and a living illustration of the adage that what a man can do, a woman can do better.

“So, you will serve as our sports ambassador; I’m glad to hear that you claimed you are not from another state. You wish to return to Ogun since you are not from Lagos. Additionally, we want to make sure you return home.

We want to reassure you that you will have a place to live in the state when you return home. As a result, we will also be providing to you a house in Ijebu-Ode.

Additionally, we will give you a tiny token and donate you an amount of five million naira, he said.

Abiodun, who highlighted that his government is on track to give the Ijebu-Ode Stadium the required makeover, said that the star athlete’s request to use the stadium for training anytime she is in the nation will further encourage his administration to expedite the stadium’s renovation.

The governor continued, “We are in the process of renovating a few of our sporting venues; I have spoken to the Minister of Sports and a few other individuals, but, now that we have one of our own who is stating that I want to train in that stadium, that puts us under a lot of pressure to make sure we prioritize Ijebu-Ode stadium because we want you to come and be training there.

While stating that his government values women’s contributions in all areas of human effort, he claimed that the passage of a legislation ensuring women’s complete emancipation in the state marked the start of a time in which they would be given greater authority.

The governor, who pointed out that young people in the nation can mix sports and education without any problems, urged young people in the nation to take a cue from the world champion who combined the two and is succeeding for herself.

Athletics, according to Abiodun, is a means of developing self-control, leadership abilities, and interpersonal interactions. He said, “Tobi has been able to succeed with a lot of discipline, hard effort, determination, and a lot of trust in her talent.”

The governor emphasized that his government sees the world champion and sport ambassador as a point of contact for other young people in the nation who no longer believe in the power of tenacity, perseverance, faith, and hard work.

Those who still think combining athletics with education is a waste of time, he said, would learn more from the tale of the World, Commonwealth, and African Champion.

Amusan urged the Federal Government to encourage athletics more while praising Governor Abiodun’s assistance in her triumph.

I appreciate my governor’s support, and I think the federal government should provide similar financial assistance to athletes, she added.

The world champion is already giving back to the community, according to her coach Abiola Onakoya, who also mentioned the Tobi Abiola Athletics Development program in Ogun State, which she runs.

On April 26, 2021, Abiodun adopted Sunday Dare, a famous athlete whose accomplishments were revealed to the governor by the Minister of Youths and Sports.
