The fact that Knight’s close friend LaBelle was there to recognize her at the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday meant a lot to Knight since the two had been friends for more than 60 years.

My younger sister is that. Knight, 78, told MINIECHAT Digital that they had been together since they were in this position. She made a low, pointing gesture at the ground. Things can become a bit harsh. We both had babies at the same time; we got them.

LaBelle, 78, spoke on stage at the event to honor her friend, referring to Knight as her “everything” and sharing memories of their long-standing relationship. Before starting her rendition of “That’s What Friends Are For,” LaBelle said, “We do everything together,” remembering times they had laughed and grieved together throughout the course of their relationship. She then added, “I am proud to celebrate you today.”

LaBelle, Knight, and Warwick have stayed close. In a January 2021 interview with HollywoodLife, LaBelle said that their relationship has endured because they don’t grow envious of one another.

“What do we do to maintain our friendship? The first is realizing that we are all indistinguishable from one another. The three of us are singing completely different tunes, so you can’t put out my candles to let yours shine brighter, LaBelle told the publication. I think the key is to put your relationship first and avoid conflict at all costs. Why fight when you can get along with two other Black ladies and make everyone happy?”

Garth Brooks, Mickey Guyton, and Ariana DeBose all gave performances as part of the homage to Knight, singing some of his best songs, including “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
