Rape of minor: Court jails prophet 21 years in A’Ibom

Anwana Essien, a prophet, was found guilty of raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter and was given a 21-year jail term by the Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo.

Justice Okon Okon, the trial judge, delivered the verdict yesterday.

Nigeria has a long history of democratic and orderly transfers of power, according to the UN
It is said that the offender, who is from Afaha Ise in the state’s Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, committed the crime on August 9, 2019, at his home on Itiam Street in Uyo.

In his testimony earlier, the 37-year-old prophet said that a devil forced him into the deed.

He acknowledged having had intimate knowledge of his stepdaughter and forcibly taking her clothing off.

Judge Okon handed down his ruling and said that the confession was “direct, definite, and clear” and that the sleazy stepfather had sex with his stepdaughter.

“The evidence of the prosecution witnesses, including the victim and the doctor who examined her, strengthened by the confessional statement freely given by the accused person himself, has fulfilled all of the criteria stipulated for the proof of rape.

The fact that the alleged man of God beat and violated an innocent girl, who was also his own step-daughter and was about 10 years old, is most heinous and tragic.

The behavior was characterized by Justice Okon as “bizarre and humiliating. The defendant is without any moral claim since he blatantly violated his stepdaughter’s body’s dignity, virginity, and sanctity while completely ignoring the fact that she was a minor, going beyond the bounds of his rights.

Essien was so found guilty as accused by the court and sentenced accordingly.

The sentence of 21 years in jail, according to the court, began the moment the defendant was arrested and transported to Uyo prison.

The prisoner pleaded with the judge to let him go since he had a kid who needs someone to take care of him.
