The Iowa Complex’s “Field Of Dreams” Will Not Host An MLB Game in 2023

The renowned poem “Casey at the Bat” has the line, “There is no pleasure in Mudville.” The absence of a Major League Baseball game from the Field of Dreams facility in 2023 will likewise bring Dyersville, Iowa, no pleasure.

The tourist destination won’t be hosting a game in 2019 due to construction of a youth baseball and softball facility, according to the explanation provided. The 2022 game is tomorrow, and the first MLB game was such a smashing success that it seems crazy not to have another one.

Frank Thomas, a former MLB slugger, said that there will be no games played at the site’s newly built stadium, which is close to the famous field from the 1989 Kevin Costner movie. He hinted at potential future developments but offered no guarantees.

Thomas told the Des Moines Register on Wednesday in Dyersville, “There’s a lot going on. “If the stadium is not ready,” they won’t return.

According to a prior analysis on the location, one annual MLB game would account for two-thirds of the stadium’s economic effect. The Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs will play Thursday in what may be the venue’s last game.

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox matchup was the first MLB game to be played there, and it drew the largest crowd in the previous 16 seasons.

A dramatic and moving moment for fans of the movie and the sport occurred when Field of Dreams star Kevin Costner emerged from the corn before the game, followed by the two teams.

This week also saw the inaugural Minor League Baseball game at the location between two Iowa clubs, the Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Quad Cities River Bandits.

Kim Reynolds, the governor of Iowa, pledged more public funds earlier this week in order to construct a long-term stadium there. Majority of the seating and other amenities will be removed from the field utilized by MLB and MiLB following the game.

Reynolds intends to give This is Iowa Ballpark, the charity constructing the stadium, $12.5 million.

The All-Star Ballpark Heaven and the Field of Dreams movie location were acquired by a company led by Hall of Famer and former Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas last year. Thomas has partnered with Chicago-based businessman and real estate developer Rick Heidner, who was one of the original investors in Go the Distance Baseball, to form This is Heaven LLC.

About 190 acres of the property were up for sale, including a functioning cornfield.
