LP knocks Seun Kuti for accusing Obi of tax evasion.

The Labour Party Campaign Council has refuted claims made by musician Seun Kuti that Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, and his family do not pay taxes to the Anambra State government, where the candidate was once governor.

Seun, the son of the late, ferocious Afrobeat icon Fela Kuti, made the assertion during a heated online political exchange with singer Peter Okoye, often known as Mr. P of P-Square.

In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye of Channels TV’s Mic On Podcast on Monday, Kuti referred to Obi as the Internet’s favorite businessman and opportunist who can’t save Nigeria.

However, Mr P was enraged by his comments about Obi and criticized Seun and the Kuti family on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

He just deleted his father’s past, dude. You said that Nigeria could only be saved by its people. Do the other candidates, including Peter Obi, not represent Nigerians? In a since-deleted tweet, Mr. P added, “SHAME SHAME SHAME.”

In response, Mr. Kuti stated the LP flag-bearer and his family left Anambra State undeveloped while investing the money gained in Nigeria in Panama, according to a popular video that our reporter saw on Thursday.

Why is the money from the Obi family in Panama, Kuti asked? He claimed that the money belonged to his family, but if not Obi’s, whose family is obligated to pay taxes to Anambra State?

“With all of their wealth, Obi’s family isn’t paying taxes in Anambra State; as a result, Anambra cannot have decent roads, excellent schools, or good hospitals because wealthy Anambra residents like Obi conceal their wealth in Panama, which is beyond the jurisdiction of the Nigerian government.

Why is his family keeping money from us to tax if Obi loves Nigeria? The people of Nigeria cannot see (access) any money in Panama since it is a tax haven; however, he makes his money in Nigeria and has no business there.

Obi has how many companies in Panama? He earns all of his money in Nigeria and hides it there, but you folks are willing to overlook that. Obi can conceal money in Panama, but Seun cannot pull an April Fool’s trick.

“P-Square may perform for any president — Jonathan, Buhari, and now Obi, for whom they have already been invited. Where is the coherence here? You’re inconsistent.

“Your employer is avoiding taxes by concealing money in Panama. He has no affection for our nation. Bring your cash so we can tax him.

“Every bit of my money is in Nigeria. I do inform my associates to deliver my money to me when I finish my performances, and I bring everything to Nigeria.

The Director General of Peter Obi’s Campaign Council, Mr. Akin Osuntokun, responded to the claim in a conversation with our reporter on Thursday, calling Kuti’s accusation baseless.
I’m not aware of any such claim, Osuntokun replied. But on the surface, it seems trivial. The issue should be brought to the attention of the Nigerian tax authorities if he wants to be taken seriously.

Additionally, Yinusa Tanko, a representative for the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, said that Obi and his family had been paying their taxes.

“I’m shocked by the statement,” Tanko said, “since Seun, whom I saw at the Benin airport on our way back to the nation, seemed like someone who was confident in Obi’s candidacy.

Seun is not a revenue tax collector, either. If he had any doubts, he could go and check, however. Obi provides tax revenue for the state of Anambra by paying taxes on behalf of himself and his family.
