CDS directs the troops to ensure calm elections.

The hope of Nigerians and nations across the globe is on security agents in the nation for the smooth conduct of the elections, according to Chief of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor.

Although the gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections are slated for March 11, the presidential and National Assembly elections are expected to take place on February 25.

There are worries that the elections might be endangered by the widespread insecurity afflicting the nation.

Speaking on Saturday at the 2023 International Military Sports Council Day Run in Abuja, which is conducted yearly to mark the end of World War II, Irabor urged the security personnel to exert all effort to ensure that the elections take place in a peaceful and secure environment.

Irabor, who was in attendance and was represented by Air Vice Marshal Jackson Yusuf, Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, said, “Today, our brave men and women in the armed forces and other security agencies can tell the world with pride of their daily successes in countering insurgency and other security challenges that have recently bedeviled the nation’s security landscape. But I implore you all to maintain the momentum.

The country and other nations are looking to us, the members of the military forces and security services, to do our part in ensuring the elections are conducted in a peaceful atmosphere. “Furthermore, you all know the elections are approaching. I implore you to uphold your constitutional duties.

Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, the Chief of Naval Staff, has instructed his personnel to refrain from violating human rights while doing their duty. In addition, he cautioned them against ever enforcing laws themselves and said that doing so may damage the reputation of the service.

Speaking at the 2023 First Quarter Route March of the service on Saturday, Gambo remarked that their responsibility to the country was useless if they didn’t have a positive connection with the public.

I encourage you to remain law-abiding individuals and preserve a friendly and enhanced connection with our civilian population and important stakeholders, the speaker said.

Also, I want to remind everyone that the political campaigns for the next general election have reached a peak. As a result, I implore everyone to remain impartial and apolitical.
