Sanwo-Olu guarantees Lagos citizens of their safety while mentioning violence in a Guber poll

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured the people of the state of the peaceful conduct of Saturday’s gubernatorial and house of assembly elections in the state.

The governor offered the guarantee in a statement published on Friday night by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.

Sanwo-Olu’s guarantee followed a proclamation by certain traditional rulers who had planned Oro rituals in their villages on Saturday.

He asked the traditionalists to respect the rights of those from diverse religious leanings.

The statement read: “Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has guaranteed Lagosians of calm elections tomorrow. There is no reason for dread.

“Following the recent announcement of several customary ceremonies by traditional rulers, the administration wants to ensure all people of the protection of lives and property in the state.

“Residents are urged to go about their civic obligations as the state government has called on all security forces to ensure the peace and safety of lives and property before, during, and after elections.

“Whilst the state government reiterates the freedom of religion, it also cautions traditional institutions holding these customary rites to ensure the activities do not infringe on the fundamental rights of citizens, who are not of this faith, especially during the elections.

“Anybody seeking to create disturbance will have the law to cope with. Our state is peaceful and it will stay so.”
