Clevinger and Manaea, two pitchers for the Padres, were hit by the Phillies in the NLCS defeat.

Philadelphia Mike Clevinger and Sean Manaea, pitchers for the San Diego Padres, had performances they’d prefer to fast forget.

In Game 4 of the NL Championship Series, San Diego’s starter Clevinger faced four hitters and failed to record an out. The Padres were behind 3-1 after Manaea was given the loss after allowing five runs in 1 1/3 innings as Philadelphia defeated them 10-6 on Saturday.

One of the worst days of my life, if not the worst, Clevinger said.

In the first inning, the Padres shocked the boisterous, sold-out crowd of 45,467 by scoring four runs and dashing Phillies starter Bailey Falter after just two outs.

But when Clevinger failed to produce an out in the bottom of the frame, the crowd erupted in cheers.

He answered, “Didn’t execute.” Just didn’t go in my favor.

The right-hander, who is 31 years old, gave up Kyle Schwarber’s opening single as well as the first of Rhys Hoskins’ two home runs. After handing up Bryce Harper’s RBI double and walking J.T. Realmuto, manager Bob Melvin exited the dugout to replace Clevinger.

Melvin remarked, “Just center of the plate and clearly didn’t have his best stuff.” I had to get rid of him soon.

To keep San Diego ahead, right-hander Nick Martinez came in and produced three outstanding innings, retiring all nine hitters he faced. The advantage, however, didn’t last very long.

Clevinger had a poor performance in his second playoff appearance. On October 11, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 5-3 in Game 1 of the NL Division Series. He took the loss after giving up four earned runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Clevinger’s current ERA in 10 postseason games during his career is 7.47.

San Diego had a 4-3 advantage despite Clevinger’s problems when Martinez left and Manaea came on to start the bottom of the fourth.

Manaea made their first playoff trip in 2022, so they weren’t exactly in their comfort zone. In 159 regular-season games, he only had three relief appearances, two of which occurred this year. In his previous two postseason games, he started both as a starter.

Manaea said that despite not having pitched since October 4, he felt fine.

I felt at ease, he admitted. “I was doing things in between to get rid of the rust. When I first arrived, the game was much like any other.

Nick Castellanos’ leadoff double and Bryson Stott’s game-tying single were both allowed by Manaea.

San Diego led 6-4 after Juan Soto’s two-run blast in the fifth inning, but Manaea received the loss at the bottom of the inning when Philadelphia seized the lead for good at 8-6.

Following a leadoff walk to Schwarber, Hoskins hit his second home run of the game, hitting Manaea’s sinker into the left-field bleachers. Realmuto was sent home by Harper’s RBI double to left-center after the 30-year-old left-hander walked him, and that was it for Manaea.

He stated, “They destroyed some they needed to and fought off some solid offerings.” “Their starting lineup has a very, very strong top four. If you lag behind them, they will demand payment.

In as many playoff appearances, Manaea has lost three times. He pitched for Oakland and suffered losses to Tampa Bay (5-1 in the 2019 wild-card round), Houston (5-2 in the 2020 AL Division), and Tampa Bay (4 runs on 5 hits in the 2020 AL Wild-card round).

Manaea’s 6.16 road ERA this season for the Padres was the highest among qualified pitchers.

On Saturday, Castellanos’ single off Luis Garcia sent Harper home to complete his line.

When he entered the zone, “he had swings and misses, but he couldn’t find it,” Melvin said.
