Elections: INEC requests patience and reiterates that every eligible voter must cast a ballot.

In order to accommodate the late start of voting, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu State has asked for calm and said that every voter in the line would cast a ballot.

Due to various logistical issues, the election typically began later than expected in the majority of the state.

When INEC officials made frantic attempts and alternate arrangements to bring its materials and workers to the polling units, the election commenced late between midday and 3pm in most sections of the state.

As voting is still taking place in the state, Mr. Rex Achumie, INEC’s Head of Department for Voter Education and Publicity (VEP), informed Newsmen of this.

Elections won’t be over, in Achumie’s opinion, until the last voter in the line is assisted.

“It will go on until the last person in the voting line in the state.

Tomorrow being Sunday, he remarked, “even if it concludes at 12 or 1 a.m., it is legitimate and our people should be patient.”
But he added that the commission was sorry for the embarrassing delay, which was entirely the fault of the commercial drivers hired to handle the logistical transfer.
