[BREAKING] IReV: Election results, safe on BVAS, INEC assure Nigerians

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has responded to complaints about the slow response time of its result viewing portal by assuring Nigerians that the development was not caused by an intrusion of its systems by outside forces and that all results, including those not yet uploaded to the portal, remained safe on the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System BVAS.

In accordance with Section 65 of the Electoral Act of 2022, INEC said that the results cannot be tampered with and that any disparity between them and the actual results utilized in collation would be properly probed and remedied.

The Commission is aware that the INEC Results Viewing Site has issues (IReV). It has been much slower and less stable than when the site was utilized for off-season elections. Festus Okoye, the INEC National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, expressed concern at this setback on Sunday. This is particularly true given the significance of IReV in our results management procedure.

He claims that the IReV’s scaling up from a platform for handling off-season State elections to one for conducting national general elections has resulted in a number of technical issues.

He said that it is common for errors to appear and be fixed under such circumstances.

Thus, the Commission wants to reassure Nigerians that the issues are not the result of any hacking or system sabotage and that the IReV is still well-secured.

Users of the IReV would have seen improvements since yesterday night thanks to the diligent effort of our technical staff, which is attempting to resolve any lingering issues.

“We also want to reassure Nigerians that the IReV and BVAS portals, where copies of the polling unit results were sent to political parties, are secure. According to Section 65 of the Election Act of 2022, these results cannot be tampered with, and any disagreement between them and the actual results used in collation shall be properly examined and remedied.

“Although we completely understand the public’s worries about the situation and appreciate the numerous ideas we have received from worried Nigerians, it is crucial to avoid saying or doing anything that might inflame the polity at this time or encourage disapproval of the Commission.

In addition, he said, “We regret the sorrow that the issues have caused the candidates, political parties, and the people and accept full responsibility for them.
