Group protests the increase in abduction in Anambra

An organization called Anambra Youth Vanguard has denounced the recent wave of murders, abductions, and cult activity in several Anambra villages.

It also denounced the murders of Mr. Ike Okolo, the president-general of the Obosi community, and nine other people on January 2 and 3.

In a statement released on Friday by its Chairman, Dr. Nnamdi Onaya, it bemoaned the over 90 people who had been abducted in Anambra between October and December 2022 and called for the revamp of the state anti-kidnapping squad and other security agencies.

Onaya, a lawyer, bemoaned the fact that some kidnappings ended in the victims being brutally murdered while others who were fortunate were released after paying a hefty ransom.

He said, “Criminal elements have been laying siege to the state, and it looks that the security personnel are unable to stop them. According to the research we carried out in the state, criminal groups may have gained control of the whole Anambra South and Anambra Central. The horrific killing of the Obosi PG and nine other people on January 2 and 3, 2023, is strongly condemned.

He continued by saying that criminal gangs were active in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, Nkpor Old Road, Nnobi-Oraukwu, Ezinfinite-Uga, Oraukwu-Ekwulobia, and Umeoji. Oba-Mili John was also active in Ojoto and Nkpor Old Road.

The security agents in the state are not working as hard as their colleagues in neighboring states, who have made strides in the battle against abduction and other criminal activities, Onaya said. “The other criminal groups are operating in different regions of the state.

“Just a few days ago, thieves destroyed the police headquarters in the Ihiala Local Government Area without receiving a sufficient reaction from security personnel.

Echeng Echeng, the commissioner of police for Anambra State, should redouble his efforts to root out criminals in the region, particularly kidnappers, and shift from a defensive to an aggressive approach to battling crime.

The state police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, refused to reply when reached for comment since he did not return calls or texts sent to him in that manner.
