Action Alliance threatens a demonstration over the rejection of candidates

A peaceful demonstration at the National Assembly against the purported removal of its candidates from the Independent National Electoral Commission’s list for the 2023 general elections was threatened by the Action Alliance on Saturday.

At a press conference held at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, Dr. Adekunle Omo-Aje, the national chairman of AA, said this.

In spite of numerous court orders prohibiting the recognition of the list of candidates submitted by the party’s ousted national chairman, Mr. Kenneth Udeze, Omo-Aje claimed INEC’s alleged failure to upload the names of all the candidates presented to it by its leadership could jeopardize the upcoming elections.

“We will go to the National Assembly in protest and present our protest letter to let our representatives know that the results of the 2023 elections would be negatively impacted if INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is not brought to order.

Every such election “runs the danger of being annulled by law,” he warned. “We will utilize all legal means to guarantee we receive justice against any sort of exclusion from presenting our candidates for elections.”

Yakubu is allegedly “covertly coordinating a clandestine scheme against the 2023 elections, and Action Alliance will not fold our arms and let our embryonic democracy be rubbished and injured,” according to Omo-Aje.

He claimed that until June 2019—when he was suspended and expelled—Udeze served as the party’s national chairman.
Omo-Aje claimed that a national elective convention held in February 2020 and observed by INEC authorities resulted in his winning the position of national chairman.

He said that rather than Udeze challenging his internal and external suspension and expulsion from the party, he brought various legal actions requesting that the courts appoint him as the party’s national chairman, but he lost them all.
He claims that the electoral umpire is “hell bent on barring Action Alliance from the next 2023 general elections” despite Action Alliance meeting all INEC electoral standards and conditions in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution with the commission.

“Action Alliance feels that the time has come to speak out in the open and issue unequivocal pronouncements to the ears of all concerned people of our nation.

He said that the purpose of the press conference was to alert the public to the injustice that INEC had experienced, which had been deliberately encouraged by its chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Additionally, he urged the Nigerian Bar Association to take action by actively purging any unsavory members from its ranks in order to sanitize the legal profession.

There is a group of attorneys in our society today who do not value professionalism or the ethical standards of the bar.

These attorneys search for legal loopholes to exploit, regardless of whether doing so constitutes abuse of the judicial system.

“Throughout our experience, we have seen a number of these very unethical activities where people hire attorneys to sue themselves as if they were really sued in court,” he added.

According to The News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Solomon-David Okanigbuan was chosen as the party’s presidential candidate at AA’s national congress, which was held in Abuja.
But the Udeze-led faction’s presidential primary poll, held on June 9 in Abuja, also went to retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, a longtime adviser to the late General Sani Abacha.

Despite court rulings that declared Udeze to no longer be a party member, the electoral umpire had recognized each and every candidate that the Udeze-led group had submitted to it.
Additionally, there is a directive for INEC to accept and publish whatever candidate the AA leadership in Omo-Aje sends their way.
